Welcome to State Library Victoria's guide to Victorian immigration and emigration records.

The purpose of this guide is to provide an introduction to researching records of passengers arriving in and leaving Victoria. It also provides information and links to resources that are available at the State Library of Victoria and other relevant agencies.

Before searching for immigration records, use birth, death and marriage records, directories, electoral rolls and census records to narrow down the date and place of arrival. When determining where to begin your search, it is important to remember that international passengers often came to Victoria via a port in another State, like New South Wales or Western Australia.

If you're looking for information on a specific ship, please consult the Library's
Ships information guide.
