Welcome

This guide will help you to identify precious metal hallmarks (gold, silver, platinum and palladium), from both library and web-based resources.

The guide explains the history of hallmarking and the need for hallmarking.

A range of specialist books have been written to help identify British and Irish hallmarks. They have been compiled from the records of the assay offices kept from the 14th century.

The Arts Library at State Library Victoria holds a good collection of standard works which will assist you in the identification of hallmarks.
