Heritage Collections Reading Room at State Library Victoria

The Heritage Collections Reading Room is a quiet supervised space for viewing material from the Library's heritage or special collections, as well as other material that may need handling assistance or special equipment to use (such as audiovisual formats).

Due to the rare, unique and/or fragile nature of materials viewed in the Heritage Collections Reading Room, there are additional guidelines, terms and conditions for using the room. These are to keep the Library collections safe and assist you with your research. Please read this guide before attending your appointment.

Heritage collections materials can be ordered via a librarian and accessed in the Heritage Collections Reading Room, by appointment. Heritage collection items will usually be available two business days after your request, subject to restrictions or item condition. Note that some smaller items which were previously available same-day will now be available next-day. See our Systems Status post for more information about these items.

Contact us via the Ask a Librarian service to order heritage collections items such as manuscripts, maps, hardcopy newspapers, pictures and rare books.
