The Australiana Index can be accessed by selecting 'Australiana Index' from the dropdown menu in a catalogue search. For detailed search advice, see Searching the index.
The Australiana Index has been compiled by Library staff over a number of years. It contains references to published material, such as newspapers, journals and books, as well as references to in-house files of various types. It contains references to material about people, organisations, places and things.
This composite database is comprised of a number of smaller indexes which have been compiled over a long period of time by staff working in the Australian History & Literature area of State Library Victoria. Pre-dating computerised databases, these indexes were originally compiled on cards. Some of these card indexes were subsequently published on microfiche by the Library. Since 1997 records have been entered directly online and there are ongoing projects to retrospectively add information from the earlier card indexes.
