Explore the free assistive technology available at State Library Victoria.

Handheld magnifiers

What is it?

For readers with low vision, the Library has available the below handheld magnifying tools:

  • magnifying sheets
  • magnifying glasses 
  • illuminated magnifiers.

These tools make printed text larger and easier to see. There is also a book rest available to hold a book upright while you use a magnifying device.

Where is it?

  • Information Centre (illuminated magnifier and magnifying sheets), Redmond Barry Reading Room (magnifying sheets) and Heritage Collections Reading Room (magnifying glass and magnifying sheets).

Magnifying aids can help you read materials more easily, such as books and magazines. This handheld illuminated magnifier features bright light, and different levels of magnification and colour temperatures to choose from.

If you require any handheld magnifiers please let staff know, so they can provide them to you.

The Library has a range of devices available to assist your reading.

Desktop video magnifier

Desktop video magnifier in the Information Centre.

What is it?

The desktop video magnifier electronically zooms in on physical books and documents. This device has a viewing plate where materials can be placed and then magnified, making it easier to read materials.

Where is it?

  • Information Centre, in the assistive technology zone.

Tips

  • You can change the page contrast or screen brightness by using the accessible buttons on the device.

ClearView+

The ClearView+ magnifier, an electronic video magnifier, in the Redmond Barry Reading Room. Next to the magnifier is a sign with instructions for the device.

What is it?

The ClearView+ is another type of video magnifier for reading or viewing images.

Where is it?

  • Redmond Barry Reading Room, in the assistive technology zone.

Tips

  • Use the sliding reading panel to navigate around documents.
  • An instruction sheet is located next to the device.
