What's been digitised?

Over 6000 objects in the Records of Coles Myer have been digitised. Digitised items relate to Coles and historically associated companies and brands such as Kmart, Embassy, Starlet and Farmland. You will find digitised photographs, books, street and store plans, journals, instructional manuals, promotional booklets, product samples and catalogues, staff uniforms, company and industry reports, internal and external speeches and talks, and information about retail trends.

Find digitised items using finding aids

What is a finding aid?

A finding aid is a categorised list of items within a library collection, grouped by topic and/or date. Finding aids help you to navigate the content of large collections. The Records of Coles Myer is a very large collection (it sits on 1 linear kilometre of shelving), so its content has been described across more than 60 finding aids.

Browse using finding aids

Explore the Records of Coles Myer by browsing its finding aids. Each finding aid describes a series of related materials; for example: MS13468/5-COLES016: Coles staff and personnel records. Once you select a finding aid to explore, click the Digital Items tab to browse collection items that have been digitised.

You can also use the 'Collection overview & search' or 'Finding aid view' to explore the finding aid. Not all collection items will be digitised, but those that are will be identified with a small preview image (thumbnail),and the word DIGITAL in red.

Find photographs

Browse photographs

You can browse for digitised photographs in the Records of Coles Myer.

Choose a category, for example Coles Staff, then click Photographs to browse.

Search photographs

You can search for digitised photographs in the Records of Coles Myer:

1. Under the Find heading, select Collection: Records of Coles Myer

2. There are two ways to search:

  • Type in a word or two which describe your topic of interest, for example a name (Beryl Atkinson). Choose 'Exact' for best results. This will search descriptions of photographs, and text from journals, books and pamphlets.

  • Type in a word or two which describe your topic of interest, for example a place name. Add the term stillimage (one word) to restrict your search to photographs.

Search tip: Locate the store number of the store you are interested in, then search by store number plus the word stillimage, e.g. Store No. 200 stillimage, using a 'Contains' search, to find all images of that store. This can be helpful if you know that a person worked at a specific store. The images in the search results may include your person of interest.

Search text across digitised items

You can search the text of digitised books, staff journals, pamphlets and typed reports in the Records of Coles Myer, using Resource Discovery. Please note that handwritten text is not transcribed or searchable.

1. Under the Find heading, select Collection: Records of Coles Myer

2. Type in a word or two which describe your topic of interest, for example a place (Ballarat) or a name (Elaine Buckley).

Search text of a single digitised item

Search or browse for digitised books, staff journals, pamphlets and typed reports (when browsing Resource Discovery, texts are often listed under the category 'Other materials').

View an item of interest. (If the item is in copyright, you may need to accept copyright access conditions before you can view the item).

When you view the item, use the search functionality to search the text. Text search can usually be accessed by:

  • pressing Ctrl-F (on PCs)
  • pressing Command-F or ⌘-F (on Macs)
  • clicking a magnifying glass symbol.
