Coles' first store opened in 1914 in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood. First city store opened in Bourke Street in 1924. Pitt Street, Sydney was the first interstate store which opened in 1928.

Myer's first store opened in Bendigo in 1905. In 1911, Wright and Neil's Bourke Street, Melbourne store was purchased to be the first Myer Melbourne store. A new eight storey building was opened in Bourke Street in 1914.
