Koorie Victoria and State Library of Victoria collections

The Library's Family History collections contain a wide range of materials as well as guides to sources held in other libraries and archives. Other Library collections - such as newspapers, manuscripts and the books can also be useful for family history research.

Useful State Library of Victoria research guides:

• Aboriginal people and family history is a comprehensive survey of records in the Library collections and will also direct you to external sources.
• Adoption and Forgotten Australians includes a section on Aboriginal people.

• State Library of Victoria family history tools and resources - introduces the Family History Centre with links to research guides, collection pages, archived audio recordings and upcoming events listing.
• 'My heart is breaking': a joint guide to records about Aboriginal people in the Public Record Office of Victoria and the Australian Archives, Victorian Regional Office.
• Lookin' for your mob: a guide to tracing Aboriginal family trees - from AIATSIS, check their web site for up to date information.
• Historical records of Victoria, Vol.8 - includes an index of Aboriginal personal names

• Koorie Heritage Trust Family History Service
• Connecting Home - community organisation taking on the services offered by Stolen Generations Victoria, which was established after a 2003 Victorian Government report.
• Link-Up Victoria - organisation working to help people who were adopted, institutionalised or forcibly removed to trace their family.
• Find and Connect - brings together resources from the 1840's, searchable by place, name of person and location of records.
• Family history - from AIATSIS. Their web site pulls together the range of records available, links to state records repositories, and the Aboriginal Biographical Index created form items held in their collections.

Public Record Office Victoria

• Koorie Records Unit - oversees the wide range of records including Aboriginal Welfare Board and mission, reserve and station records and the Koorie Index of names project. Information on guidelines for access are included and guides to researching Koorie history.
• Aboriginal Victorians - links to information on records series.
• walata tyamateetj - guide to government records about Aboriginal people in Victoria.

National Archives, Canberra

• Records about first Australians - description of records held by National Archives relating to Victoria, Northern Territory and Australia more generally.

The National Library are custodians of the Bringing them home oral history project established after recommendations from the report.

The Library holds many biographies of Aboriginal people.

• Dawn Lee, in Daughter of two worlds tells the story of her family, from the early days of Melbourne, to Lake Condah, and back to Melbourne after expulsion as 'half-castes'. 
• Untold stories : memories and lives of Victorian Kooris, gathers together biographies written from both records and interviews, of Aboriginal people from the Western District of Victoria.
