For most of its life, this core publication has had the title Commonwealth of Australia gazette. Between July 1973 and June 1977 it had the title Australian government gazette.
Up to 1973 the gazette was published as a single volume that included the general or weekly gazettes, the periodic gazettes and the special gazettes. From 1974 it was divided into three series, bound separately. For more information about Commonwealth Gazettes see the Gazettes Introductory page of this guide.
Commonwealth Gazettes dating from 1901 to current are available online at the Federal Register of Legislation website.
Commonwealth Gazettes between 1901 and 1957 are now searchable on Trove using key words or phrases.
They are also available by individual dated gazette. Take care when searching for the individual issues as Trove also has the NSW Government Gazettes -- search Browse first and then click on Place to reveal the Commonwealth Gazettes.

Published on Tuesdays. Included legislation notices, government notices, defence force appointments, business notices such as bankruptcies, government purchasing and disposals.
Purchasing and disposals section was hived off in 1985. In 1987 it was split into two separate gazettes – Business (see Other Gazettes page) and Government notices .
This gazette is published weekly and has information about proclamation of acts, general government notices etc. It was created when General gazette was split in two.
Government notices (from 1 October 2012 to date) - ONLINE The electronic version appears some time after the paper publication of the weekly gazette.
Periodic notices appear irregularly and are usually devoted to lengthy information about a particular subject.
Recent issues have related to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, the register of the national estate and instruments made under the National Health Act.
In the late 1980s and 1990s, many subjects which were previously published as issues of the Periodic gazette were hived off into their own gazettes or became separate publications altogether.
