Catalogue

Why can't I find a record in the catalogue?

Occasionally, when you use a persistent link to access a record in the catalogue, you may see the following message:

Record may no longer exist error message

As part of the catalogue upgrade in August 2022, every record in the catalogue received new record number. We made every effort to ensure that links saved from the old catalogue will redirect through to the right record in the upgraded catalogue, however this may not always work.

If you come across the message shown above, please try the following to find the item you're looking for:

  • Search by title
If you know the title of the item, searching for this in the catalogue is often the easiest way of finding the item you're looking for
  • Search by author
If you know the author of the item but not the title, try searching by the author's name and look for the item in the results. You can also sort the search results by title to help make finding a specific item easier.
  • ISBN / ISSN
Searching for the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) for a book, or ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) for a newspaper, journal or magazine should take you straight to the item in question.
  • Accession No.
The Accession Number is a unique identifier assigned to records for items such as pictures (e.g H2011.150/1273) or manuscripts (e.g. MS 13020). Search by the accession number, if known, should find the item you seek.

If these options don't work, you can also try searching by the record number. The persistent link you're using to access a record may look like this:

http://search.slv.vic.gov.au/permalink/f/1cl35st/SLV_VOYAGER2504949
http://search.slv.vic.gov.au/permalink/f/cjahgv/SLV_ROSETTAIE727096

The record number appears at the end of these links (the portion in blue in the examples above). If you search for this identifier in the new catalogue, you should find the record directly.
