Find statistics from Australian censuses from 1788 to present
Use our Early Australian census records research guide to discover:
Before 1901, statistics were collected in musters or censuses by individual colonies. There was no truly national census (colonies often conducted censuses in the same year, but the questions asked were not consistent). As statistics were inconsistently collected across censuses, they not be directly comparable. Consult the Census history and Aboriginal Australians sections of this research guide for more information.
Some early censuses record only include basic statistics about the population, but some include details about individuals.
