Find statistics from Australian censuses from 1788 to present
In most cases you will find the information you need in our printed resources, listed below.
More detailed data can be found on microfiche.
'Statistics on microfiche include:
(a) small area summary tables and counts for most geographic areas from CD's [collection districts] up to Australia level and
(b) cross-classified tables giving more detailed statistics on characteristics of persons and dwellings at broader geographic levels.
Further information on the range of microfiche available, and individual table characteristics can be found in Information paper No. 3 release of data on microfiche (2106.0) and the Catalogue of 1976 census tables (final) (2103.0)' (source)
'Limited cross-classified tables were made available (these are census "matrixes" in which one characteristic (eg: occupation) is cross classified against another characteristic (eg: industry). In this example the cross classification would provide the answer for example to the question: "How many carpenters work in the film industry in ...?")' (source).
The Library holds an incomplete set of these microfiche at MF 171. The fiche must be pre-ordered for use (use link below). You must use the guides listed under 'Research help' (box below) to determine which microfiche you need, as there are thousands of fiche in the set and it is not possible for us to retrieve all of them. If you are having trouble determining which fiche you need, please ask us for advice.
We believe that the University of Melbourne holds a full set of these microfiche (including collection district summary data and other fiche).
