A guide to family history research using the major Victorian resources
Rate books contain the names of previous owners and occupiers of a property, the date, value and description of the property and the amount of rates to be paid. The level of information may vary between each municipal district.
A number of Victorian rate books, for varying dates, are held at the State Library Victoria. A comprehensive list of our holdings appears in the PDF document found on the right hand column of this page. The list includes links to any online collections that have been digitised by the relevant local council.
Alternately try searching the library search using the terms 'rate books' or rate assessment'. This will result in a list of most State Library holdings of rate books. Or try a search with the name of the council or borough area and the term 'rate' for more specific results. For example; rate Yackandandah or rate Minhamite.
A large collection of rate books are held by the Public Record Office Victoria.
A range of pre-1970 rate records have been published on PROV's catalogue, including -
Borough of Flemington and Kensington (1882-1906), Town / City of Melbourne (1861-1975), Town of Melbourne / Town / Borough of Hotham / North Melbourne (1855-1905), City of Box Hill (1936-1947) and the Indigo Shire in the Municipal District / Borough of Beechworth (1856-1871)
The following rate books, held at PROV, are available online through the Ancestry Library Edition database. This database can be accessed onsite at the State Library and is also available in most Victorian public libraries.

Another option is to check with the relevant local public library or family history society for the area you are researching to see if their historical rate book collections are available.
