A guide to accessing South Australian Government publications
The South Australian Legislative Council was established in 1843 as a body whose members were all nominated by the Crown. From 1851, it included a majority of elected members but also continued to include nominated members until 1857.
With the coming of responsible self-government in that year, the House of Assembly was established. There are no official recorded debates in the Legislative Council before 1857.
From 1857 to 1895, the debates of the 2 chambers were published as one title. From 1896 to 1913 there were separate publications for each house and from 1914 to 1993 the debates of the 2 chambers were again published as one title.
Since 1993, there have been separate publications for each of the chambers.
